CFAR would like to
thank its supporters for the expressions of concern and well wishes in the wake
of Tropical Storm Fay.
The system crossed into South Florida on Tuesday and made its way up the state.
Its path took it directly into Brevard County, dropping historic levels of
rainfall. In some areas, over 24 inches of rain fell, making it more than the
total of all three 2004 hurricanes combined. There were tornados reported in the
Barefoot Bay area, and the flooding has shut down many major roads in the
county.
We have been very fortunate to have been spared the worst of the storm's
damage. Recent reports have indicated that the storm has slowed down and seems
to be sitting right over the county.
In spite of the rain, some of the cats are enjoying a good splash and all
seem to be in good spirits.
The CFAR facility has activated its weather resistance and recovery plan. We
lost a few tarps in the strong winds that have blanketed the area. Staff and
volunteers have been diligently cutting down the shredded covers to make sure
they don't hold water or blow into any enclosures. They have been working
tirelessly to dig trenches to allow the water to flow away from the cats. Sump
pumps and wet vacs are on hand to clear the water.
We will continue to post updates regarding the status of the facility. Your
support will be appreciated throughout the recovery process.
More to follow as it develops.
UPDATE: 9/24/08
The waters surrounding the compound receded within a week
of the storm passing. Many thanks to the volunteers and donors who spent
their time and resources to see to it that the facility was returned to a
pre-storm state. |
